Roleplaying City Map Generator
42Some time ago I read about an awesome freeware city map generator for Windows. But alas the creator’s site is down for quite some time now and it’s pretty hard to find a copy of the map generator on the web. So when I finally found a copy, I decided to host a copy of the latest version of the Roleplaying City Map Generator at my Google Sites site for your convenience.
- RPG City Map Generator (.MSI) 1788k (Download)
- RPG City Map Generator (.ZIP) 1605k (Download)

By the way, if you know some interesting (and preferrably free) map creator software, please let us know in the comment section of this post! Thanks!
Update: Several people reported that the zip file got somehow corrupted. I reuploaded it and added the unzipped version.
Update #2: I uploaded the latest version of the software (v5.40) and removed the ZIP download. Thanks to Di for providing me with the latest version.
My first CC3 map
1Yesterday I finally sat down to create my first map in Campaign Cartographer 3. I bought the software and played a bit around, but never actually made a proper map with it. Now that I am in the process of fleshing out my Dungeonslayers campaign I thought it was the right moment to learn the art that is map making.
At first, let me show you a small portion of my map:
The whole map is of course much, much bigger. But this small map should give you a hint on what the complete map looks like. It took me a couple of hours to map the whole thing, but smaller maps are done in just a couple of minutes.
But I couldn’t have done it without the video tutorials at the official ProFantasy site. These videos give you a step-by-step instruction on how to create beautiful and professional looking maps.
If you are into map making you really should try CC3 out.
Stargazer’s RPG Stuff
3Inspired by fellow RPG blogger Zachary’s post “Using Google Sites For Your Campaign” I created a Google Sites site of my own that I will fill with everything that goes beyond the scope of this blog. Most of the stuff you’ll find there will be mostly of limited value to you since its half-baked stuff that I transferred from my wiki or its written in German.
Nevertheless, feel free to check it out!
D&D Character Builder is now in Open Beta
0
DDI Non-subscribers rejoice! Wizards of the Coast has decided to make the D&D Character Builder beta version available to non-subscribers too. You can get the downloader for the latest version from here. The installation process is a bit complicated though. After you run this “downloader”, it starts to download and installs the real install files (including the most recent version of the .NET Framework). Expect to have to restart your machine to complete the process.
According to what I’ve read the Character Builder open beta includes the same feature subscribers currently get. You can create all kinds of D&D 4th Edition characters up to level 3, which is pretty nice for a free beta product.
I haven’t had the time to test it properly, so a proper review has to wait. And I hope that the new classes and class options that were introduced in recent releases (like the Swordmage etc.) are already part of this software package. I am keeping my fingers crossed!
Every GM needs this!
6Every GM should play this when he leaves the game table to go to the bathroom or get some more soft-drinks and snacks from the fridge:
You can get the original mp3 from the Geek Heretic blog.
UPDATE: The ZIP linked in the post is corrupted. But here’s a direct link to the mp3 file that works!
iPhone app “Mach Dice”
0Since the AppStore opened its doors, hundreds of applications where released for the iPhone and the iPod touch. There are a lot of dice applications that simulate dice rolls on the iPhone but the majority of these programs simulates six-sided dice only and most of the apps are pretty boring. The best dice-rolling application to date is “Mach Dice”. It was obviously developed by an avid gamer since it includes all of the common polyhedral dice and uses the (x)d(y) nomenclature (like in 3d6). Check out that video:
The application costs $1 (or 0,79€ in Europe) and is almost a must-have for iPhone-using roleplayers!
After watching the above video I HAD to buy it at once. And I don’t regret it … ![]()
I first read about this awesome app on Jonathan Grain’s d20 Source. He’s a fellow member of the RPG Bloggers network and if you have any time to spare check out his blog!
TenFootWiki 2.0 – the ten foot pole for GMs
0When planning a new campaign or even a whole new setting a wiki can really come in handy. But usually you need a web server (or hosted webspace) with support for PHP/Python/whatever and sometimes even a MySQL database to setup a wiki software. On the plus side you get a wiki you can access all over the internet but on the minus side you won’t be able to access the wiki when you’re offline and in most cases you’ll have to play a couple of euros a months for hosting. An alternative would be installing XAMPP (or a similar package) on your PC but this is sometimes not an option or just overkill if you want to take some notes during the preparation of the campaign or even during play.
Here comes TenFootWiki 2.0 to the rescue. TenFootWiki 2.0 is a modification of GTDTiddlyWiki that was created by RPG blogger UncleBear. Instead of wiki software like MediaWiki (Wikipedia is based on this software), you don’t need a server to run it. In fact it’s built to reside on your local hard drive, usb thumstick or even a floppy disc. The whole wiki consists of a single html file that you can view and edit by using your browser. I have tried it out today and it works like a charm!
For more information on TenFootWiki check out this post.
