WR&M

Check out these WR&M reviews!

Recently a few more reviews of WR&M have been released. The first has been written by Ina Vegt of the “Tales of the Swampwitch’s Adventures” blog. Some while ago she already reviewed the 4-paged version of the game and now she picked up the revised version to give it another look. Here’s an excerpt from her review:

All in all, this is an improvement over the old version of WR&M, but the new things aren’t really ground shaking, and the differences are minor. It’s free, so if you enjoy WR&M, or think you might enjoy it, you should pick it up.

The second one has been written by Will Hopkins of Creatively Anomalous. His support and comments to WR&M actually helped me a lot when I was working on the revised edition. He also included “From the Imperial Forges” in his review. Here’s what he has to say about the game:

At the astonishing price of $0, you can’t afford not to pick up both WR&M and From the Imperial ForgesWR&M makes a great game for experienced and new roleplayers alike, and there is something attractive about the DIY nature of the game.  It’s certainly a polished product, but it still feels like something a bunch of friends cooked up together.  I can’t give a much higher recommendation than that.

Thanks for the reviews, Ina and Will!

Coming Soon: Resolute, Adventurer & Genius

After the flurry of work to get Warrior, Rogue & Mage ready, I had time to think about how the Wyrm system might be adapted to other genres. Mark Meredith is hard at work on a spy/technothriller adaptation which I am eagerly anticipating. Jason Cabral, a longtime friend, and I had poked around with doing cyberpunk, and we still may, but out of the blue one day not long ago Jason said to me, “You know what would really rock? Pulp.” (more…)

WR&M review by Wyatt Salazar

Wyatt Salazar is somewhat like a RPG blog nephew to me. Back in the day, when he wasn’t one of the more popular D&D 4th Edition bloggers out there, I was one of the first people who linked to his blog “Turbulent Thoughts” (Warning: Not For The Faint Of Heart!).  ;)

Like me he likes homebrew systems (and even created one of his own) and recently he has finished writing a review about my own "Warrior, Rogue & Mage” game. Please head over to “The Spirits of Eden” and check out what Wyatt has to say about my little rules-light game!

And while you’re there, don’t forget to read the funniest review on the internet!

Thanks again to Tristan for having me on the show. It was an honor and a pleasure!

WR&M Review @ The Chaos Grenade

1

I am always overjoyed to read reviews of my game “Warrior, Rogue & Mage”. And I am especially happy when someone enjoyed it very much, like in the case of R.E. Davis from The Chaos Grenade. He’s using the game to run a campaign in a post-apocalyptic/steampunk campaign. The only thing he didn’t like that much was the fact that the exploding die mechanic can be a bit too lethal:

I will give the warning that the exploding dice mechanic can seem to bite a person’s face off with relative ease in this system. If there was anything I felt needed to be changed, is perhaps figuring a way to scale this mechanic back a tad. In our game session Saturday Night, my dice were out to kill my friend Josh’s character. This could be either a boon or a bane for some; on one hand, this means even the weakest of foes and characters have the opportunity to dish out some serious damage or miraculous skill rolls. On the other, it can lead to some horrendous party wipes and what was supposed to be an easy encounter suddenly becomes the end of a campaign.

You can read the full review here. I have to admit I’ve encountered the problem in my own playtest sessions as well and I am already thinking about easy ways to fix it without abandoning the exploding die rule. Expect some advanced/optional rules in the coming weeks.

Some House rules for WR&M

2

During the last days a lot of people have started creating their own stuff for Warrior, Rogue & Mage. There are already a couple of discussion threads on the official Stargazer Games forums, and fellow RPG blogger John Payne posted a few of his house rules on his blog “Sycarion Diversions”.

Aside from some Errata (expect some official errata, when I am back from Gen Con), he posted new spells, and a cool gun-toting mage called Peregrine. When you are interesting in WR&M you definitely should check out John’s additions!

By the way, if you have designed any house rules, written a review, or produced anything else WR&M-related, please let me know, that I can post about it here!
