June Solstice Giveaway: The lucky winners

6

On Saturday morning I created a list of the 29 valid contest entries and then used the random number service provided by random.org to generate three random numbers. The lucky winners of the June Solstice Giveaway contest are as follows:

I already sent each winner an email and when they accept their prizes I will send out the coupon codes, so that they can get their copies from RPGNow/DriveThruRPG. In the case that anyone does NOT accept, I will randomly pick a new winner from the remaining participants.

If you are listed as winner here and if you haven’t received an email, yet, please let me know via the comments below. I’ll then make sure I resend the email!

I also want to thank everyone who entered the giveaway contest and rest assured there will be another chance to get some free stuff from us in the upcoming week. So stay tuned!

Fantasy Craft giveaway: The lucky winner!

4

Thomas C This weekend Roberto and I talked about who should get the free PDF copy of Fantasy Craft. In the end we picked Thomas C. Why? We like the fact that he wants to review the game for his blog and that he plays with his kid!

I already sent him an email and when he accepts, he’ll get a second email with the coupon code he can use to get his free copy from RPGNow/DriveThruRPG.

Thomas, if you are reading this and you haven’t got an email from me yet, please let me know via the comments below. I’ll then make sure I resend the email!

I also want to thank everyone who entered the giveaway contest and rest assured there will be a few more chances to get some free stuff from us in the future. So stay tuned!

You want to get a free copy of Fantasy Craft? Here’s your chance!

DriveThruRPG

UPDATE: Contest is now closed. I will announce the lucky winner next week!

As you probably already know we joined OneBookShelf’s Blog/Podcast Support Program recently. And if you haven’t already done so, you can still use the 20% discount, I wrote about some days ago. But there’s more!

We got provided with a couple of PDF products we can give away for FREE! And since these coupons are valid for one customer only, we decided to run a couple of contests in the coming days/weeks.

The first free product I want to give away this week is Crafty Games’ excellent fantasy game Fantasy Craft. So what is Fantasy Craft about? Let me quote from the first look post I wrote last year:

Fantasy Craft coverSo, what is Fantasy Craft anyway? It’s Crafty Games’ take on fantasy role playing using the d20 system. Instead of creating a game that is more or less compatible to D&D 3.5 (like Pathfinder), they created an almost completely different game. Combat has been streamlined (Attacks of Opportunity are gone for example), there are a lot of cool new character classes and races, they came up with a new way to create NPCs and monsters, they totally overhauled feats and the magic system relies on magic points and skills. Wow! Of course I haven’t been able to read all 400 pages of rules, yet, but I am officially impressed. More than once I thought: “That’s how D&D 4th Edition should have looked like”.

And this week we are giving away a free copy of the PDF version of that book! Here are the contest rules:

  • Tell us what you like the most about Fantasy Craft in the comments below
  • Make sure it’s five sentences or less
  • Make sure you enter a working email address when you submit your entry. If I can’t get back to you, I can’t provide you with your coupon!
  • Since the prize is a coupon code for RPGNow/DriveThruRPG, you need to register for an account there
  • The contest ends on noon of June 11th 2010 CEST (GMT +2)
  • I will then close the comments on this post and over the weekend we’ll pick a winner
  • Winners will be announced early next week.

I wish you all the best of luck!

Why isn’t Gears done yet?

6

As you probably know, I have been working on the roleplaying game project “Gears” quite a while now. In the meantime I even released an early draft to the public, which looked pretty playable, if you ignore the fact that it still laceds magic rules and talents. The problem is that I basically keep rewriting the rules from scratch.

The gist is that I don’t “feel” that the current rules are as they should be. That’s a pretty fuzzy description on what’s currently going on in my head. When I write something, design a rule, etc. I want it to have the right feel to it. Much of what I do is more by intuition than an exact science. When something I work on, doesn’t feel right, I keep rewriting it as long as I am happy with it. And alas this just doesn’t work with Gears.

While I love a lot of the concepts I added to the game, it just doesn’t work out (for me) as a whole. The core mechanic is cool, but when combined with the skill ladder and other parts of the game, it feels awkward and unwieldy. I keep changing the combat rules and damage mechanics and fiddle around with the skill lists.

While I was working on Gears I had this idea for a smaller game which uses the classic fantasy archetypes to describe the capabilities of characters: Warrior, Rogue & Mage. And to my surprise the game works great and it’s very easy to adapt to other genres. Instead on working on Gears, which makes me want to tear my hair out, I would love to put more effort in WR&M or something derived from it.

That’s pretty much the reason why Gears isn’t done yet and why I think it’s probably best when I put it officially on the backburner for now. As long as Gears looms like Damocles’ sword above me, I can’t put some serious effort into anything else.

Ok, I just needed to get this off my chest. Now let’s return to our regular program.

Check out Signs & Portents #80

1

I have to admit that I haven’t read Signs & Portents before, although I’ve heard it’s quite a good magazine, especially if you are into the games made by Mongoose Publishing. But issue 80 has a special significance to the Stargazer’s World team.

That’s because this issue of the free RPG magazine features an article by our team member Roberto Micheri aka Sunglar! Congratulations, my friend!

Signs & Portents #80
You can download a free PDF copy of Signs & Portents at RPGNow. Alternatively you can download all issues from 26 to 80 from the official Mongoose website.
