I am currently trying to fend of an unending onslaught of spam comments on this blog. When I woke up this morning there were 17 new comments to be approved and they were all spam. And over the last few hours I had to delete a few more spam comments. Since comments are vital to any blog (at least in my humble opinion), I will not restrict anyone from posting his thoughts, BUT there is always the possibility that I delete someone’s post by mistake. If you notice something like that, please let me know via the contact form on the About page.
By the way, what do my fellow bloggers do to ward off spam? And have you too noticed an increase in spam comments too?
UPDATE: I added “Simple Trackback Validation” and “Peter’s Anti-Spam” to the blog and deactivated Akismet again. Thanks to ChattyDM for the recommendations.
I started using Akismet for the same reasons about a year ago. Since then, I've had only two spam comments to delete manually.
That's what I should have done! I have installed Akismet now, let's hope it works!
Second the vote for Akismet. It works, and does a good job of learning about new spam attacks too.
Yeah, some spambot seems to have discovered RPG Bloggers network…been getting a steady trickle of spam on posts in Tales of the Rambling Bumblers for a couple of days now.

Yeah fear of spam is why I've been using a simple math captcha on my Drupal based website. I've never used Akismet on a wordpress site, but reading about it, it sounds like a good option.

Only seventeen? You're lucky. At my peak, I'd be getting something like a hundred, with more coming in while I was reporting the current batch as spam. Now if they'd just quit constantly pinging the post they used to target…
CAPTCHA seems to get the bulk of them, and while I haven't actually tried Akismet, I've heard good things about it.

I use Akismet as well… it works wonders.
I don't like CAPTCHAs, so I've been avoiding those. If much more spam starts slipping past Akismet, I might implement a very simple one, but so far, Akismet has only missed two or three spam comments.
I don't like the really complex CAPTCHA, but a simple CAPTCHA is no big deal. However, I understand why people don't like them.
