Some time ago I read about an awesome freeware city map generator for Windows. But alas the creator’s site is down for quite some time now and it’s pretty hard to find a copy of the map generator on the web. So when I finally found a copy, I decided to host a copy of the latest version of the Roleplaying City Map Generator at my Google Sites site for your convenience.
- RPG City Map Generator (.MSI) 1788k (Download)
- RPG City Map Generator (.ZIP) 1605k (Download)
By the way, if you know some interesting (and preferrably free) map creator software, please let us know in the comment section of this post! Thanks!
Update: Several people reported that the zip file got somehow corrupted. I reuploaded it and added the unzipped version.
Update #2: I uploaded the latest version of the software (v5.40) and removed the ZIP download. Thanks to Di for providing me with the latest version.
Awesome indeed. Thanks!

Glad you found what you were looking for. I'll have to check on this application when I get some time today. I'm always in the mood for something to take away from what I have to do.

For random generators, you may want to look at the 7 random dungeon generators I reviewed recently:

'can not open roleplaying_city_map_generator.zip as an archive'
bummer.
Try downloading it again. This obviously happens once in a while. The Google Sites pages seem to be under quite some stress at the moment.
Can not open the roleplaying_city_map_generator.zip as it is not an archive.
Tried multiples times from both links above.

The file indeed got corrupted, so I reuploaded it and even added an unzipped version. I hope it works for you guys now.
Thanks, that worked.
Thanks for finding and hosting this. This will come in handy.

Man, I love you. Seriously I have spent hours looking for this and you have done me a great service. Seriously, I love you ^_^
Hi!
I kinda stumbled on your post while looking for updates on this city map generator and it seems to me that the version you posted is outdated. It's possible to download the version 5.40 from a couple of sites, but i uploaded it to http://drop.io/rpgcitymapgen# just in case.
Thanks a lot! Hehe, I actually didn't know there was a newer version available. I will upload the latest one to my site ASAP.
Thank you very much for your kindly effort in creating a new download availability, of the RPG City Map Generator.
Happy Greetings Ole
you sir, deserve a medal of honour, the nobel peace prize and a lifetime pass to the playboy mansion.
Thanks! 🙂
You good sir, are a legend. I take my hat off to thee.
Thanks! And I am just providing a public service here. The creator's site has been down for quite some time now, so I thougt he probably doesn't mind when I host the file here.
I know I'm coming very late to the party but I figured you might be interested in this tutorial which shows you how to take the maps generated by the program and turn them in to really great looking maps using photoshop.

Hey, that's cool! 🙂 Thanks for that link! It's much appreciated!
out of curiousity, what is/was the creator's website?
http://www.drachenzahn.de but it's down now 🙁
Do you know how to contact the author? We'd really like to do a version of this for CC3.
Sorry, I have no idea. I even did some research using the Archive.org web archive. I found the name of the site owner. But alas I found no phone number and no working email adress. Since the author was obviously a German, I would have even called him to help to get you in contact, but alas my google fu lost me.
It's a shame really. But perhaps you can do something similiar without the author's help.
Thank's a ton! I've been searching for ages for a program to do just what this does. 🙂
actually, I've been using the free source AUTOrealm for a while, but it's not really supported anymore. It is great for fractal lines and coasts, though. It also has a grid that can scale to the miles you input, and I personally think that's invaluable.
oh thanks! I was looking for this for days!
I like this application. but am i right in thinking i cant make coastal towns and cities with it, only ones on a river?
I think so.
You could always generate one on a river, then just Photoshop it into an Oceanside town 🙂
Thank you for hosting this. I love this little program, it's so useful when you need to create any kind of city/town/village map for rpgs, stories, or whatever.
hey man
thanks for great effort
if it's possible, i may ask if you can develop a character generator program for http://www.narutod20.com
with the ability to print character sheets?
thanks
As I wrote in the post, I didn't develop that program. I am merely hosting it after the original creator's site went offline.
This is absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much!
Hi I have a question. How do I save the image as .gif or .bmp or whatever? Sorry to not be clear it just won’t save the image in a way my computer can read
Below the City Map Preview you find a button labelled “Export selection as image(s) …”. You can click on this button to export the map as BMP file.
Here’s a link to a free browser rpg encounter map creator, it’s beast:

Is there a legend? I can’t find one in the program and I can’t figure out what certain things are (ie. green circles, brown lines, black lines)
As far as I remember there is no legend. The site of the original creator is long gone and I am just hosting the file. Alas I can’t really provide support.
This is an OLD version of the Roleplaying City Map Generator, being version 4.5 instead of 5.4. Features are missing, like the export image button that should be at the bottom. I’ve looked around on the web a lot and could not find a proper updated version!
Could you please update this to 5.4?
I have stated this several times before: This is the only version I have and I am not affiliated with the creator of this fine program in any form. If someone can provide me with an updated version I will gladly host it, but as long as that doesn’t happen, you’ll have to be content with this version. Sorry.
Try this link for version 5.40:

Thanks. I also updated the file I hosted here. It now should be the same as the one at rpglibrary.org.
You are literally wonderful Sir! I’ve been looking for something like this since I can’t afford big fancy software and this is perfect. Thanks kindly <3
Time marches on. In 2014, I find that this program which I used to love is not working so well with all the updated software and OS versions available. The online version look very romper room to me. I so wish that the creator would publish an updated version.
I’ve created this tool some time ago as a toy project http://rpgtables.com where you can create your own tables and share… Hope you find it useful.
I just found this one, which I think is really cool as well:
